The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 35,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty area. The Complementary & Integrated Therapies (PNI) SIG (previously known as the PNI & Complementary Therapies) was established in 1992. Our SIG has 378 members who have interest and expertise in a vast array of Complementary & Integrative Therapies including Herb, Reiki, Massage, Aromatherapy, Music Therapy, Therapeutic Humor, Spiritual Care, Art Therapy, Yoga, Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, etc.
Complementary & Integrative Therapies SIG Mission Statement
Complementary & Integrative Therapies (PNI) is a relatively new field of science that encompasses interactions among psychological, behavioral, neuroendocrine, and immune processes. Complementary & Integrative Therapies practice and research recognize and explore these interactions and their effects on the well-being and quality of life of the individual.
The mission of the Complementary & Integrative Therapies (PNI) SIG is to promote understanding and application of PNI (mind-body) research and clinical practice in oncology nursing.
Goals
- To promote understanding of the scientific basis guiding mind-body research and clinical practice among Complementary & Integrative Therapies SIG members and ONS members.
- To foster expertise of ONS members in the use and evaluation of established mind-body interventions.
- To promote networking among Complementary & Integrative Therapies SIG members.
The Complementary & Integrative Therapies (PNI) SIG has chosen to fulfill its mission through activities such as presenting educational sessions at Congress and Institutes of Learning, sponsoring rejuvenation sessions at Congress, our newsletter and other publications.
